Crystal Structure and XPS Study of Titanium-Substituted M-Type Hexaferrite BaFe12−xTixO19

The M-type barium hexaferrite substituted with titanium, BaFe12−xTixO19, was synthesized from sodium carbonate flux and the obtained single crystals a maximum degree of substitution up to about x = 0.9 were characterized. XPS measurements carried out for identification side products in particular order assign valence states transition-metal constituents. Due aliovalent exchange iron(III) titanium(IV), an additional charge balance needs occur. No titanium(III) detected, while amount iron(II) increased same magnitude as titanium(IV); thus, major balancing is attributed reduction iron(II). According data, titanium(IV) typically slightly higher than that This line tendency minor formation vacancies on sites becoming more important at levels according PXRD WDS measurements, completing picture charge-balance mechanism. XRD taken indicates distribution titanium over three five sites.
